“Rupert?”

Rupert blinked. His eyes were heavy with sleep, and it took him a moment to remember he wasn’t at home. He’d fallen sleep on the couch with Clawdia on top of him plenty of times, but this time, it wasn’t on his couch.

Jude was leaning over him.

Rupert sat up. “Shit. Sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep on you.”

Clawdia dug her claws into Rupert’s chest, and he winced. He untangled them from his sweater and put her down, praying she wasn’t going to make a mess.

“S’okay. I cooked dinner.”

Rupert looked out the window. The snow was still falling, heavy and fast, and he knew he was going to have to take Jude up on his offer of letting him spend the night on the couch. That made him both annoyed and giddy. He still felt a weird little twisting in his stomach every time he looked at Jude, and he couldn’t believe he still had a crush on him, but there he was. Maybe spending the evening with Jude would show Rupert that Jude was an asshole or something like that, and Rupert would be able to get over him.

Hope was the last to die and all that crap.

He got up and stretched before following Jude into the small kitchen. There was a tiny breakfast nook by the window there, and Jude had set the table. Steaming plates of pasta were waiting for them, and Rupert’s stomach growled. He blushed and rubbed it, sending Jude an apologetic glance. Jude chuckled and pointed at one of the chairs.

“Sit down. From the sound of it, you’re more than ready to eat.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. You walked through the snow all the way here. I’m not surprised you’re starving.”

They both sat and spent a few silent moments adding grated cheese to their plates and pouring water into their glasses. Rupert had a hard time keeping his mouth shut and not asking the dozens of questions he wanted to ask, so he stuffed it with pasta. He groaned at the taste of tomatoes and garlic. Jude’s gaze snapped to him, and he realized Jude probably thought he was a pig.

He cleaned his mouth and drank some water, trying to behave more like a human being and less like he’d been raised in a cave by wolves. “So, you’re spending the holidays here?” he asked when the silence became too much.

Even at home, there was always something on, be it the TV or his MP3 player. He couldn’t stand silence.

Jude put his fork down and cleared his throat. He cleaned his mouth with his napkin and took a sip of water

Rupert knew he shouldn’t have asked that question. “I’m sorry. Feel free to tell me to shut my mouth if I’m asking too many questions or if you don’t want to answer. Actually, never mind. I’ll just focus on eating and leave you alone.” That ought to make things easier for both of them.

“It’s not that I don’t want to answer. It’s just... hard.
